What do I do with this grant check?
All checks and accompanying documentation should be forwarded to the attention of the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR). Faculty and staff members need to follow carefully University regulations about accepting gifts and grants. If you have questions about gift acceptance, the correct procedure for depositing gifts and grants, or the appropriate acknowledgment of them to the donor organization, please contact CFR for assistance at cfr@princeton.edu or 609.258.5965.

What do I do if there is grant money left over?
The University has established procedures to ensure that donor intent is fully and carefully honored. It is the responsibility of everyone involved with a gift or grant (including administrators; principal investigators; departmental, program, and center managers; staff of CFR and the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA); and members of the Treasurer’s Office) to make certain that funds are used in compliance with what the donor intended when the gift or grant was made. The check has been deposited—now what?
Once a gift or grant to Princeton has been received and properly recorded, it must be acknowledged as required by law—and common courtesy. A thank-you letter officially acknowledges that Princeton received the gift or grant funds. It also thanks the people involved for the organization’s support of University activities. In addition to being the right thing to do, it can pave the way for ongoing favorable relationships with all donors.

In many cases, CFR will draft the University’s official acknowledgment letter to the donor. We also can assist with tracking reporting deadlines and reminding the principal investigator or administrator of upcoming report due dates.
